masterpiece

“Masterpiece.”
What do you think of when you hear that word?

The Sistine Chapel of Michelangelo?
“Romeo and Juliet” by Shakespeare?
The 95-96 season of the Chicago Bulls?

Whatever you think of, it usually means the same thing.
Something spectacular—there’s nothing else like it—nothing in the world.
Something that’s a masterpiece is one-in-a-million. A treasure.

You might be interested to know what God thinks of when He hears the word “masterpiece.”

He thinks of you.

In Ephesians 2 verse 10, the apostle Paul tells us that “we are God’s masterpiece.”
You are His work of art—His greatest creation.
You are His poem—His finely crafted sculpture.

I know what you’re thinking. “Me? A masterpiece?”
Don’t be so quick to dismiss the idea.

Listen to verse 9 and the rest of verse 10 in Ephesians.

“Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so that we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”

Ephesians 2:9-10

Every masterpiece starts out as a blank canvas.
The quality of the canvas isn’t what makes something a masterpiece, it’s the ability of the artist.
The canvas merely submits to the will of the artist.

It’s the same with us.
When we give our lives to God, He wipes the slate clean.
No ugly marks of the past—no failures or foul-ups.
Then He begins to craft His masterpiece.
The work isn’t done all in a moment—it takes a long time to create a masterpiece.
Someone watching might wonder what the artist is doing or how the pieces all fit together.
Most of the time the canvas doesn’t even know what the end result will be.

But one thing is sure: the Master Artist knows His craft and He will not be satisfied with anything less than a masterpiece. Come to think of it, He was willing to die to make sure the work is completed.

He was
betrayed,
spit on,
laughed at,
beat up,
whipped,
and hung on a cross.

All for you. His masterpiece.

And then, when all the work had been done, he simply said, “It is finished.”
